About HYLF

Houston Young Lawyers Foundation

The Houston Young Lawyers Foundation was created in 1992 to support the charitable programs of young lawyers in Harris County. The Foundation's mission is to support and encourage education and programs that promote and aid an improved system for the administration of justice in Harris County, Texas and assist those in need. In 1998, the Foundation Board of Trustees established a Fellowship program in order to both recognize distinguished lawyers and provide an additional source of revenue to fund charitable programs.

In addition to the Grant Program, other programs that are the cornerstones of HYLF's commitment to making a difference include: Adopt an Angel; Fellows Program; Fun Run; Golf Tournament; and Law Day. For more information about these programs, click on the tab corresponding to each program.

A Letter from Joshua L. Fuchs, the HYLF 2016-2017 Chair

“Building a Legal Community of Service and Giving”

Fellows,

You are receiving this letter because you are a Fellow of the Houston Young Lawyers Foundation. Being a Fellow is an honor that is bestowed upon a select few who have demonstrated true dedication to the legal profession and the community at large. You are one of those people! We on the Board of Trustees thank you for what you have done and continue to do.

July 1, 2016 marked the new bar year for the Foundation. As you know, the Foundation is the charitable arm of the Houston Young Lawyers Association. It is an exciting time to be both a part of the Foundation and the Association! The Association is currently extremely active with outstanding events and unprecedented growth. As a Foundation, we get the unique opportunity to make a substantial impact in the areas in which our local community needs it most. Fellows, like yourself, make that possible.

Last year, because of you we were able to provide grants to Arrow Child & Family Ministries (Freedom Place), Beacon Law, Bo’s Place, Casa de Esperanza, Children 4 Tomorrow, Making it Better and Texas Center for the Missing. Our biggest goal this year is to do more!

An additional goal this year is to provide more opportunities for Fellow involvement. We hope to do so by providing better communication, having more Fellow events, and encouraging you to be an active participant in our signature fundraising events and activities. While we will, of course, continue to have our Fellows appreciation luncheon at Brennan’s in the Spring, we are also planning to have an appreciation event for our Fellows in the Fall. These events are designed to allow you to network with other Fellows and to show our appreciation for what you do for the community. These events are designed for you and come at no charge. Please be watching for more information on these events soon.

Our signature fundraising events and activities include the Fun Run, Golf Tournament, Law Day Luncheon, and Adopt-an-Angel program. More information about each of these events is included below.

  • Fun Run. Our annual Fun Run is now in its 14th year. It will take place on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 7:30am at the Sam Houston Park. We are hoping to have up to 500 participants with great running, music, food and drink for all involved. It’s not too late to sponsor or participate. If you would like to be involved, please contact Co-Chairs Darren E. Ticer at dticer@tekellbook.com or Chris Abundis at chris.abundis@swiftenergy.com or register to run at www.active.com.
  • Golf Tournament. Our golf tournament is in its 23rd year and continues to be a big success. The tournament will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2016, with a shot-gun start at 12pm at BlackHorse Golf Club. We are hoping to have at least 120 golfers this year with great give a ways and prizes. There are numerous way to sponsor or participate in the tournament. If you would like to be involved, please contact Co-Chairs Phil Haines at phaines@akllp.com or Andrew Edelman at aedelman@winstead.com.
  • Adopt-an-Angel. This event is a staple of the Houston legal community. Each year the Foundation and the Association partner with law firms and businesses in Houston to serve our community by fulfilling the holiday wish lists of more than 2,000 elementary age children in our community. We hope that you will participate by sponsoring a child and providing gifts, or being one of the many volunteers that are needed to make this amazing act of kindness happen. If you would like to be involved, please contact Co-Chairs Michelle Gray at mgray@fbfog.com or Samantha-Ann Horwitch at Samantha-Anne.Horwitch@alliantgroup.com or Kristin Baker Bates at kb@hwallp.com or Sherry Hill at sherryhill@sherryhillatty.com.
  • Law Day Luncheon. As part of the nationally celebrated Law Day, the Foundation and the Association have traditionally held a luncheon that underscores how law and the legal process contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share. Last bar year’s highly attended lunch celebrated the impact Miranda has had on our country with Rusty Hardin and Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson sharing their wisdom on the subject. This bar year’s lunch will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 11:30am at the Marriott Marquis Houston (1777 Walker St.). This year's keynote address will be delivered my City of Houston Mayor, Sylvester Turner on the theme: "14th Amendment: Transforming American Democracy." We look forward to your participation and attendance. If you would like to be involved, please contact Co-Chairs Kelley Clark at kclark@grayreed.com or Alex Farias at alexandra.farias@morganlewis.com.

For more information on these events please go to the Foundation’s website at http://www.hyla.org/foundation/hylf-programs or reach out to anyone on the Board of Trustees. In addition, we plan to add another signature event in the Spring and will be sending more information on it soon.

As a Fellow of the Foundation, your contribution and involvement is greatly appreciated and needed for us to continue to give back as a legal community. To the extent you need to make a payment on your Fellows’ commitment, that can now be done online at http://www.hyla.org/foundation/pay-fellows-commitment.

Additionally, Fellows are also eligible and encouraged to become members of the Association, either as regular or sustaining members. HYLA members get access and discounted prices to HYLA events throughout the bar year. For more information about HYLA membership levels and to join or renew your membership for this bar year, please visit www.hyla.org/join-or-renew.

As I said above, it’s an exciting time to be a Fellow! We look forward to working with you this year and seeing you at our future events.
