HYLA partners with Houston Volunteers Lawyers to provide our members with pro bono volunteer opportunities throughout the year, including Legal Lines and intake clinics. Please visit our calendar for specific opportunities, and contact Lauren Brogdon (email Lauren) for more information.

Making It Better

Thanks to a generous grant from Texas Young Lawyers Association, HYLA is partnering with a local literacy-focused non-profit organization called Making It Better to host Family Literacy Nights at community centers in Houston. Family Literacy Nights are fun events where literacy is literally "brought home" to an under-served community in the Houston area and consist of various activity stations designed to engage the children and parents that live in the apartment complex, plus free food and literacy-related giveaways (books, book marks, etc) will be provided to the attendees. HYLA will provide 15-30 volunteers to help run the event.

For only two hours of your time, YOU can make a difference in the community. To learn more about Making It Better, please visit their website at

Bears for Babies/National Adoption Day

Each year the Harris County CPS hosts a National Adoption Day Event. These adoptions are mainly CPS adoptions, as opposed to private adoptions. These children have been in foster care from as little as one year, to years and years. Many of these children have special needs. When a child gets their "Forever Family" they also receive a Stuffed Animal to commemorate their special day. HYLA Members donate/collect stuffed animals to give to children in the courtroom for National Adoption Day. Additionally, bears are given to the new siblings of the children being adopted to make the transition easier for the family.
