WELCOME TO HYLA
Welcome to the HYLA website! What is HYLA? HYLA (otherwise known as the Houston Young Lawyers Association) is a specialty bar association. Our regular membership consists of attorneys who are 36 years of age and under as well as attorneys who are over 36 and are practicing law for five years or less. Our associate membership consists of law students, who are awaiting their bar results. Our membership spans all types of law practices: Large, medium, and small firms, in-house counsel, the non-profit sector, solo practitioners, and law students to name a few. HYLA is a fun, diverse organization that gives its membership an opportunity to experience more than just practicing law. It allows them to serve the community, socialize, network, and enjoy recreational activities. People join HYLA for a variety of reasons: to network, to make friends, to be leaders. We have something to offer everyone, if you want to be involved a little or a lot. Whatever your reason is for joining, we welcome you and hope you enjoy participating in our varied activities. It is a great way to show the legal field how dedicated you are to your chosen profession and that you would make a valuable employee. HYLA is a great outlet to help maintain a great balance and quality of life. To join HYLA, please click here for a membership application.

HYLA LEADERSHIP ACADEMY PREPARES FOR A NEW CLASS - APPLICATION DEADLINE IS FRIDAY
HYLA’s Leadership Academy prepares young attorneys for leadership roles in HYLA as well as other organizations. Class members learn from community leaders, experts in the field of communication, negotiation and other areas critical to developing leadership skills. The academy runs from November through June.  Those selected for each year’s class will attend a retreat for class orientation and team building. Class members will then meet for lunch on the third Friday of each month, where leaders and scholars will share the fundamentals of leadership and provide guidance for developing the skills necessary for success. During the tenure of the class, members will have the chance to use their leadership skills and work together to make meaningful contributions to their community. Ultimately, the class will develop and execute its own project—designed to leave a lasting impact on both the class and the community. The application to join the 2010-11 class will be due by 5:00 p.m. on September 3, 2010.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR NEW HYLA COMMITTEE
Ever had your identity stolen? Ever wondered if you should "untag" that picture from your college days? Ever regret a tweet or message you posted? If you answered yes to any of these questions, imagine what it's like for the generation that has grown up with myspace, facebook, and youtube. The Texas Young Lawyers Association has published a video, "R u Safe," targeted to educate youth on these issues and we need your help to get the word out!  Click here for more details.  HYLA and the HBA plan to roll this video out to our Harris County youth and we need volunteers to visit the schools throughout the year. We will send you the materials you need in order to participate. If you would like to serve on the committee, please send your name, telephone number, email address, and the geographical locations (Southwest Houston, Katy, Memorial) that work best for your visit to Anita Barksdale at abarksdale@fulbright.com
