Leadership Academy
2009-2010 Leadership Academy Class Project at the H.P. Carter Child Development Center
—Developing Young Lawyers Today for Leadership Tomorrow—
HYLA’s Leadership Academy prepares young attorneys for leadership roles in HYLA as well as other organizations. Class members learn from community leaders, experts in the field of communication, negotiation and other areas critical to developing leadership skills.
The class runs from November through June. Those selected for each year’s class will attend a retreat for class orientation and team building. Class members will then meet for lunch on the third Friday of each month, where leaders and scholars will share the fundamentals of leadership and provide guidance for developing the skills necessary for success. During the tenure of the class, members will have the chance to use their leadership skills and work together to make meaningful contributions to their community. Ultimately, the class will develop and execute its own project—designed to leave a lasting impact on both the class and the community.
Applicants are selected based on several criteria, including, (1) leadership skills, abilities, and potential; (2) achievements and accomplishments; and (3) community and bar involvement. Each person invited to become a member of the class will be required to pay an entry fee of $200, which will cover the cost of the luncheons and various other programs.
HYLA's 2010-11 Leadership Academy Class begins with a mandatory retreat on Saturday, September 25, 2010, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Regular meetings are also mandatory and will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the following Fridays: November 12, 2010, and January 14, February 11, March 11, and April 15, 2011.
