THE TEEN COURT OPPORTUNITY:
Volunteers train high school students to prosecute and defend the punishment phase of Class C Misdemeanors.
WHAT IS TEEN COURT?
Teen Court is a national program that offers an alternative to teen defendants for class C Misdemeanors. The benefit for the teen defendant upon completion of the program is the waiver of the fine and dismissal of the citation after performing jury duty in Teen Court and community service. It is also a unique volunteer program that allows teen volunteers to deal with real people and make real decisions that have an impact on other people's lives while earning community service credit and learning about the legal process in the United States.
Teen Court was developed to:
· educate youth about the judicial process,
· to reduce juvenile crime, and
· to foster civic engagement of youth to increase social and emotional well-being in our youth today, who become our professionals of tomorrow.
Teen Court is a "hands on" educational experience that allows both offenders and teen volunteers a better understanding of our system of justice.
It aids in the development skills of our student volunteers by encouraging critical and strategic thinking.
It instills an understanding of the concept of actions having consequences in the offenders who take advantage of this legally binding alternative system of justice.
And it provides an opportunity for the attorney volunteers to encourage values of society, leadership and character education.
