The Houston Young Lawyers Foundation was created in 1992 to support the charitable programs of young lawyers in Harris County. The Foundation's mission is to support and encourage education and programs that promote and aid an improved system for the administration of justice in Harris County, Texas and assist those in need. In 1998, the Foundation Board of Trustees established a Fellowship program in order to both recognize distinguished lawyers and provide an additional source of revenue to fund charitable programs.
In addition to the Grant Program, other programs that are the cornerstones of HYLF's commitment to making a difference include: Adopt an Angel; Fellows Program; Fun Run; Golf Tournament; and Law Day. For more information about these programs, click on the tab corresponding to each program.
Dear HYLF Fellows,
As the Houston summer sun continues to bake and steam us, it is time to kick off another bar year. HYLF had an incredible year last year, and we hope to expand on that success. The HYLF board has set two goals for the year. As the new Chair of the HYLF Board of Trustees, I hope you will help me and the rest of the board in meeting these goals.
Our first goal is to raise $175,000 in gross revenue. This revenue goal is $30,000 more than we raised last year, but with your support and focused efforts from the HYLA and HYLF boards, I know we can make it! This short-term goal is a crucial step towards the success of achieving our second goal. The foundation has ended each of the past several years without additional revenues to grow our investment account. While we have still achieved our annual goals of funding local charities, sponsoring Law Day, and organizing Adopt-an-Angel, we have bigger and better plans to really enhance HYLF’s impact.
Our second goal is long-term. As you may know, HYLF was organized during the 1992/1993 bar year. HYLF’s 30th anniversary is coming in just five short years, and in time for that anniversary, we are committed to growing HYLF’s investment account to $1 million. Achieving the $1 million milestone will allow the foundation to provide larger grants to an increased number of deserving local charities. Growing the HYLF investment account to $1 million will also allow the grant program to continue whether HYLF has a banner year or a down year. The many HYLF boards that have come before have given us a great start, but to meet this goal, we will need to meet our revenue goal this year and also raise an additional $30,000-$40,000 in each of the next four years to fund the investment account.
So, how can you help? First, I am going to try to send you monthly emails-short notes about what you can do to get involved and help us reach our goal. Please take five minutes to read these emails, and take action—tell a friend about an event they may be interested in, ask your company/firm to sponsor one of our events, and/or come yourself and get involved in an event. Second, your monetary contribution to HYLF will help us meet our goals. Please consider becoming a life fellow (someone who has paid off their obligation) this year. Every time someone becomes a life fellow, that enables the board to elect another person to become a fellow, who then starts paying on their obligation, allowing the foundation to raise more funds.
First up on our calendar of events is our Fun Run (or walk). The Fun Run will take place this year on Saturday, August 26th, 2017 at 7:30 a.m. at the Sam Houston Park in downtown Houston. It is going to be hot, sweaty, and awesome. This is a great event for individuals of all ages, and there are prizes per gender and age group, as well as for 4-person teams (teams of legal professionals and non-legal professionals). We still need company sponsors and participants! This event raises money for HYLF, and also Change Happens!, a non-profit community-based organization that provides a variety of programs including homelessness support services, children’s insurance, substance abuse treatment, and HIV prevention services. Please visit this website for more information (including a link to the registration page): http://www.hyla.org/foundation/hylf-programs/hylf-fun-run or contact the chairperson of the Fun Run committee, Darren Ticer at firstname.lastname@example.org. Also, please visit, like, and share the event page on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1940244982913615/.
Second, HYLA will be putting on an End of Summer Soiree (happy hour) on August 23rd from 6:00-8:00 pm at Allen’s Place, 114 Main Street. During the Soiree, Allen’s Place will donate $1 for every drink purchased to HYLF to split with SER-Ninos Charter School, one of HYLF’s grant recipients last year. SER-Ninos is looking to stock its library (which operates year-round and provides books, trainings, resources and materials free of charge to the Gulfton community), and HYLF will also be accepting book donations at the event. Did you know, according to SER-Ninos, that in below-poverty areas there is an average of 1 book for every 300 children? Helping stock this library can have a dramatic impact on the Gulfton community. Please come, bring a book, and have a drink!
With your help, it is going to be another great year for HYLF!
