HYLF Adopt an Angel
HYLF’s annual Adopt an Angel program is one of the organization’s touchstone events. It rallies the Houston legal community to meet the needs and provide gifts to some of Houston’s neediest children. Working with local elementary schools and charities, HYLF coordinates the donation of gifts—bikes, toys, clothing, and school supplies—purchased by attorneys and employees at 65 Houston law firms and legal departments for more than 2,200 children. HYLF collects the gifts and delivers them to the schools and charities, even providing Santa Claus to hand out the gifts!
Planning for the Adopt an Angel program begins in the late summer and early fall. The HYLF committee contacts the schools and charities to receive the students’ wish lists. HYLF volunteers assemble the thousands of wish lists into packets that are delivered to the firms and legal departments for distribution to the individuals contributing gifts. The individuals purchase and wrap the gifts and then drop them off at locations around the city, where HYLF volunteers fill U-Haul trucks destined for the different schools and charities. On the delivery day, a team of volunteers—some dressed as elves and a Santa Claus—deliver the gifts and hand them out to the children.
The Adopt an Angel program requires many, many volunteers. Obviously individuals can participate by volunteering to receive one or more wish lists and purchase gifts for those students. But volunteers are also necessary to prepare the packets and assist with the collection and delivery of the gifts.. The Adopt an Angel program provided presents to over 2,200+ children this past year. This year we are partnering with Woodson Elementary, Belfort ECC Headstart, Casa de Esperanza, Catholic Charities, House of Tiny Treasures, Presbyterian Children's Homes and Services, and Star of Hope.
The success of the Adopt an Angel program is dependent on the generosity and time of its volunteers, donors, and participants. The program currently relies on more than 70 firms, businesses, and organizations in the legal community, and more than 1,200 individual volunteers. If you or your firm, business, or organization has an interest in volunteering, donating, or participating in the Adopt an Angel program, please contact one of the committee chairs.
